Hundreds of people left Scotland for the Melbourne gold rush but with 800 shipwrecks due to fog that hid these rocks, only 54 survived. Eva Carmichael and Tom Pearce were the only survivors of one ship that crashed – when he heard her cries for help he paddled over on a piece of wood and brought her to this bay before climbing out for help. She was crestfallen when she learned her family of 8 had all died and returned to Scotland. Tom became a captain of a ship that sailed to Scotland and by chance, he met Eva again and they married.
