Hard to believe that this assembly of flora and fauna not found anywhere else on Earth was being sold off privately for development by the Jon Bjelke-Peterson government in the 80’s. Thanks to conservation minded vigilant watchdogs, it’s now been established as a World Heritage Site but I still shudder at the thought of its near destruction and when expressing this to my guide, he said, “yeah – when we gave you Robert Murdock we thought we’d gotten rid of the worst of them – but you got to stay on guard and stand ready to defend common sense.” No truer words….
