In Port Douglas there is a sanctuary called Wildlife Habitat which allows you to walk through re-created spacious woodlands, rainforests, and savannahs of Australian animals like koalas, kangaroos, and birds to permit up close interactions. A few keepers wander about as well to answer any questions you might have – when an emu started to approach me, I asked this guy whether or not these birds could get aggressive – he told me “no – this one (the one he’s hugging) is a real sweetheart – that one over there – her name is Karen because she’s the asshole.” Got to love a guy who can appreciate animal personalities!
