There are a lot of flightless birds in NZ simply because they had no predators until rats, weasels, possums and the like were introduced by traders for their meat and fur. You see a lot of squished possums on the road because people hit them with their cars in an attempt to eradicate the population. If you don’t see road kill, the guides tell you that that’s a good sign- they’re making progress!
