Peter Jackson discovered the pastures of the shire when he flew over the Alexander family sheep farm in Matamata. While the original plan called for burning the village down after completion of the movie, the Alexander family agreed to grant 12 acres of their ranch to retain the hobbit holes for a percentage of what was made on organized tours of it. I suspect they may make a bit more than they did selling sheep.
