Ann Frank Huis and Papeneiland

A tour of the Ann Frank Huis requires a time out for reflection and no better place than Papeneiland, one of Amsterdam’s oldest cafes and just down the Prinsengracht  Canal at the corner of the Brouwersgracht canal. During the 16th and 17th century Dutch protestant reformation, Catholics had to worship in secret and this cafe provided a tunnel that led to a hidden church. Now it’s main claim to fame is its apple pie – former president Clinton liked it so much that he took a whole one home with him. As for me – the bitterballen with a cold beer while people watching became a staple.  Added plus- you can walk off all that goodness in the nearby Jordaan District – one of the coolest places in Amsterdam.
