During a walking tour of Montmartre, our guide pointed out this water fountain – one of many situated throughout France. He explained that this is due to the belief that every citizen is entitled to drink water when thirsty- to the extent that if someone comes into your shop and indicates they’re parched, you must provide them with a glass of water! He also advised we not waste our money by buying bottled water as this was a free public service available to all and that the water came from local lakes and streams and was extremely pure. This was mind blowing to those of us in the group from California for obvious reasons!
