Greek hospitality

I arrived at this sea front cafe at about 4ish with plans to watch the sunset. I was surrounded by people playing cards, backgammon, horse trading, and shit swapping…in other words, a delightful late afternoon. After finishing my third glass of wine with the sun now bidding us all good night, I went into the bar to pay my check ( wait staff are disinclined to provide you with a bill for fear it may imply they wish you to go ) The young woman I approached asked “do you really want to go??!!” I shrugged and she responded, “stay and have another glass on us”. I asked incredulously “why??!!” and she simply said “Because you are in Greece!”

This experience came on the heels of an afternoon at the beach, where one of the staff came up to me mid day and said ” what kind of sunscreen are you using” – I showed her my bottle and in dismay she said ” may I take care of you like I would my mother” and whips out this fortified Greek sunscreen and proceeds to spray it all over me.  She returned shortly with a bottle of cold water and suggested I drink it to stay hydrated. I asked her how much she wanted for the bottle and she waved her hand like I had insulted her. “Just finish it” was all she said before leaving.
