There’s a great restaurant called the May Flower right on the wharf of the darling fishing village of Getaria known for its fresh fish. I wasn’t able to figure out how to make reservations so went with fingers crossed that I might get in. As luck would have it, someone had just cancelled and I was able to get a table right on the edge of the sea! After ordering something “fishy”, I saw a plate of fresh asparagus pass by and waved my waiter over to ask him to add that to my order. He unceremoniously told me that I had already ordered enough food for one person to eat! I was so flabbergasted, that I didn’t have the presence of mind to tell him that was my call and dutifully obeyed. But still thinking about that asparagus as the “one that got away”….
On another note, Getaria is about 30 minutes north of Zararitz, the longest beach in Basque County – on the Cantabrian sea. My original plan was to spend the day there and then go to Getaria for dinner however inclement weather determined more time to explore “G”.
