Watching these little girls on their own reminded me of when my mother would get her hair done every Friday in Escalon and give my sisters and me two dollars. We walked several blocks to the town’s bakery to each get a treat ( one dollar gone ) and then on to the local record shop to buy a 45 ( the other dollar spent ) This “journey” equaled the time it took for Mom to complete her beauty regime so that by the time we came back, she was about ready to go. I don’t see kids on their own in the U.S. much due to safety concerns but saw plenty of them overseas walking to school, playing in squares or planted at cafe tables like pictured probably due to the plaza’s very active “surveillance system” of older women with watchful eyes.
