While I was supposed to be listening to our tour guide talk about the massacre of jews in Lisbon by this historical church, I became distracted watching these two grifters in action. It was a Sunday so while the church was in service, no one was allowed to go in or out. They used this time to position themselves at the entry and eat what looked like a pretty expensive lunch – two huge sandwiches and a bottle of coke plus what looked like a dessert bar. One of them pulled out her IPhone during this time to text some people. This dog wandered over and plopped himself down by her. She tried to shove it away, yelled nasty things, and threw some rocks at him but he didn’t budge.
When the church doors opened and people started to file out, it was show time and they began wailing about the hungry children at home they needed to feed while shaking their coin cans. Every time a person started to go near them the dog barked ferociously driving them off. You could see the steam coming up from the woman’s ears. It was priceless – I had seen that dog in the square earlier. Think this might have been his beat and he was keeping the place honest.
