When d’Este arrived in Tivoli as the new governor, he didn’t like the look of the home assigned to him so he built a villa with gardens in a style appropriate for someone who kept peacocks as pets. It was not far from where Emperor Hadrian had built his pleasure palace so he helped himself to many of the marbles and statues from this ancient site to decorate his new one. Recycling for the self indulgent!
