Ljubljana castle

standing on a hill above the city for over 900 years, the castle’s outlook tower offers some fantastic views of the city. Its original purpose was to provide a defense against the never ending invasions of the pesky Ottomans. After the fall of Napoleon it functioned as a military hospital, eventually becoming a state penitentiary before serving as a holding tank for prisoners during World War I. After the war ended ostracized citizens of Slovenia lived there until the early 1960’s. You can learn more about its fascinating history in a renovated museum and historical rooms. A lovely restaurant or cafe with spectacular views is a nice way to cap off the day!
