The one heartbreaking element of the extraordinary experience of Petra is the way the animals are treated. Donkeys, horses, and camels are often beaten and forced to carry visitors in extreme heat without shade or water. I’m told that some animal rights groups have been making the conditions more favorable but still much more needs to be done. Best first step an individual can do is DON’T RIDE THEM!
