Hundreds of monks take part in the tradition of almsgiving every morning before sunrise. This dates back to the 14th century when monks walked down the streets collecting alms (usually sticky rice) from those looking for blessings and good karma. Since many locals believe they are feeding departed ancestors through the monks, care is given to food preparation. My hotel receptionist told me that if I wanted to participate, she would make the food for me so as to avoid purchasing a package from merchants on the take. She actually met me at 5 am and we went together – it was so quiet – only the sound of shuffling sandals as the monks passed by us.
