After the Taj Mahal, this was my favorite place in Agra. Built during the second half of the 16th century by Emperor Akbar, it served as capital of the Mughal empire for about 13 years before the spring fed lake that supplied the residents with water dried up resulting in its abandonment. It contains Jama Masjid one of largest and most stunning mosques in India as well as three palaces for each of Akbar’s favorite wives- a Hindu, a Muslim and a Christian.
