after carpets are washed, they are laid out on grass to dry to make a pretty, colorful patchwork quilt. This place was a trip – in addition to several stalls where clothes were being washed and this large outside area for drying them, there was also an indoor pavilion where a couple of guys were pressing clothes with irons heated with either electricity or hot coals. Quite a production – and ongoing since the Dutch introduced this in the 16th century.
