These were introduced by Chinese traders in the 13th century and are still in use today. Several are lined up along Fort Kochi Beach with nets suspended in mid air held together with teak and bamboo poles. The system is balanced so that the weight of one man walking along the main beam is sufficient to cause the net to descend into the water….when the net is lifted later, viola – a fish fry!
