Kochi became the first European colony in India when the Portuguese developed it as a harbor in the 1500’s – the Dutch assumed control in the 1600’s and later swapped it with the British for Indonesia. Teak, ivory, spices, sandalwood and peacocks were the chief exports. It’s still an active fishing village with fisherman like this one lined up on the harbor banks selling their early morning catch.
