lunch time on the Maassi Mara

Every day at around noon Kenneth would find a tree for us to sit under to eat our boxed lunches. One day, we had been preoccupied with viewing a number of animals so it wasn’t until about 1:30pm or so that we started to look for a suitable tree…by this time, most of the trees had been “taken” by other groups on safari so it took quite a while to find a place. Add to this, one of Kenneth’s guide buddies had been following us for most of the morning due to Mr. K’s luck with finding animals – with him were two men from Seattle so we were a big group, looking for a larger tree with plenty of shade. Kenneth finally located a tree that suited our needs so I made what I thought was a brilliantly witty observation saying “this is one of the best restaurants around so unfortunately if you can’t make reservations, you risk all the good tables being taken – but we lucked out and got the best seat in the house!” Kenneth didn’t laugh so I assumed it was just a language/cultural thing and sought what I thought would be a more receptive audience in my Seattle friends and repeated the observation when they got out of the jeep. When they didn’t laugh either I turned to Kenneth and mumbled ” I guess no one gets the joke” to which he responded…( in his African accent) ” I think maybe you think of this as a joke….but maybe others do not see it as funny as you do?” Right there – a succinct summation of the story of my life.
