This bakery served all the traditional Greek pastries and I felt it my duty to try as many of them as possible. You have not fully lived until you have had a warm bougatsa in the morning with greek coffee – it’s a custard wrapped in phyllo dough and so wonderful it literally melts in your mouth. ( The friendly personnel also give you a free bottle of water to help stomach strong greek coffee!) This bakery was right around the corner from me and was flagship to a row of cafes that in the morning were filled with mostly older greek men having what looked like little coffee klatches ( I could watch them for hours communicating with each other with such expressive hand gestures and voice intonations – like a melodic chorus) and in the afternoon backgammon players followed later in the evening with 30 and 40 somethings participating in a social scene that was lively, festive, and colorful.
