volcanic lava preserved the 4,000 year old town of Akrotiri which is being excavated as funds are raised. It’s enclosed in a museum with walkways that allow you to view various aspects of village life. What archeologists can tell us is that the citizens were peaceful traders and sophisticated ones at that. They’ve discovered multi story buildings, an elaborate drainage system that included flushing toilets – and beautiful frescos on the walls ( they’re trying to get them back from the British Museum ) that depict an international culture probably due to the many places they traveled to for trade. The pots in the picture are originals – 4,000 years old!
