The island is said to be cursed. After a major fire destroyed it, Benedictine monks were granted permission to build a monastery here. However when its amazing landscape returned, aristocrats wanted it back. The enraged monks walked the perimeter of the island 3 times in single file with lit candles upside down leaving a trail of melted wax. This weird parade came with an admonishment that whomever used the island for pleasure in the future would be damned. Subsequently the 3 who tried to establish living quarters there died – one by falling out a window, one by drowning, and one by murder!
