With the body of a lion and head of a human ( which resembles pharaoh Khafre ) this was guardian, protector and destroyer of enemies of RE- the sun god. It was carved from a single piece of stone by 100 workers with chisels and hammers over three years. Originally the body and face were painted red, the headdress yellow and the now eroded beard blue. Could have been an inspiration for the Marvel cartoon characters!
